How do you approach designing a holiday event differently from other types of events?

Holiday events offer a unique opportunity to design for connection. In the now hybrid corporate world, many guests don’t see one another regularly, so these gatherings become meaningful moments to reconnect face-to-face. AE approaches holiday events with that in mind, intentionally creating spaces and experiences that encourage authentic interaction.

Because holiday events are typically centered on celebration rather than educational or professional advancement content, we lean into creativity and storytelling. This allows us to surprise and delight guests with unexpected elements they may not have seen before, from immersive design, thoughtful details, or moments of awe that feel special, festive and memorable.

What are a few simple ways to elevate a home holiday party using professional event design principles?

Elevating a home holiday party doesn’t have to be overcomplicated; it’s about being intentional. Simple elements like candlelight can instantly create warmth and ambiance, while incorporating live, natural elements such as floras, greenery, or seasonal branches brings texture and life to the space. 

I also encourage hosts to think like an event planner and consider all of the senses. Soft lighting, curated music, inviting scents, and beautifully presented food all work together to create a memorable experience. 

Adding meaning through personal touches, like conversation cards, personalized place settings, or a shared moment of gratitude helps guests feel connected and turns a beautiful gathering into something truly special. 

What holiday event trends are you currently loving?

I love seeing draped fabrics incorporated into holiday design. Layered, folded table linens and soft fabric installations instantly add warmth and a sense of abundance to a space. Draping creates movement and texture, making the environment feel luxurious but inviting, a perfect touch to holiday celebrations where comfort and elegance go hand-in-hand.

What do you love most about celebrating the holidays in Philadelphia?

The holidays in Philadelphia feel especially magical because they blend timeless tradition with the city’s signature character. Our family has a long tradition of staying a night at the Four Seasons, seeing The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music, and enjoying a special dinner in the city. I also love stopping by the lobby at the Ritz Carlton to take in the holiday decor. It’s a class Philly experience.

What makes this city so  special year-round and especially during the holidays is its eclectic mix of elegance and grit. One moment you’re surrounded by something beautifully refined and the next you’re discovering something quirky and unexpected. Whether it’s experiencing the festive sights and smells of the Reading Terminal Market while picking up last minute stocking stuffers (like my favorite hand cream from The Herbiary) or seeing the city dressed in its holiday best, Philly offers endless little moments of seasonal joy.
